The problem with water is
it forgets what it retains. Remember
thereโ€™s salt in the top most shelf โ€“
you put it there along with the dried fish,
the pickled papaya, and the ghost of your father
trapped in the salt shaker. There is much to say
about putting things away โ€“ how we overlook
the folds in arranging, how we hold things dear
without throwing it away. In a memory, you fell
in love with a green-eyed boy and left him
your heart as you put the phone down
to forget. In a memory, there was an inexplicable wave,
a desire โ€“ but you got up and left,
faceless in a crowd.
